RECRUITING CAMPAIGN.

APPEAL FOR. THE BELGIANS

I The combined recruiting and Belgium Fund campaign undertaken by Mr O. T. J. Alpers and a largo number of equally enthusiastic citizens was open■ed on Tuesday night in the Oddfellows' Hall, Kaiapoi. There was present an audience- that occutried all the available accommodation. The gathering took the form of a concert and variety entertainment, followed by addresses. Musical items were contributed by Madame Ottlee, Mrs Vernon, Miss Dulcio Mitchell, and Messrs Walter Ingle, "W. Cook, J. Cocks, Chas. Joll, and Vere Buchanan. Drj -Jennings gave an interesting account of three well-known . British marching tunes—"The Campbells are Coming," -'The British Grenadiers," and! "The Girl I Left Behind Mc," his remarks being accompanied by musical illustrations. Mr Sidney Brett gavo several humorous monologues, Mr 11. Cookson a conjuring turn, and Mr It. WJallwork, A.R.C.A., did a lightning sketch picturing an attack at dawn. Mr Alpers gave a stirring address on the needs of the Belgians, appealing for funds, not on the ground of charity, but on the grounds of political duty. He also eooke rousingly on the question of enlistment, stressing the necessity for every able-bodied man joining fhe colours.

On Saturday Hororata will be visited, when the programme will be contributed by Madame Ottee. Mrs Vernon, Miss (Thikie. Mitchell. Mips "Wrigliton, Miss Ifcivenport. and Messrs Farquhar Young, W. Injjle. W. Cook, and J. Cocks, and Mr Alpers will deliver an address.
