NEWS AND NOTES.

IMPOBTATION OF PRIZE BORDER LEICESTERS.

Mr D. M. Sutherland, a well-kuown sheep-breeder, yesterday lauded a valuable consignment of Border Leicester sheep imported by him from Scotland. They have been on Quail Maud, in quarantine, for the last six weeks, and were brought a/uhoro in excellent condition. The sheep have come from tho flock of Messrs Archibald Cameron and Sons, Westside, Biechin. The ram at the head of the consignment is stated to have been the most expensive of the breed ever sent to New Zealand or anywhere else Ho was the champion at tho Highland and Agricultural Society's Show at Hawick last year, where he won much distinction ror his breeder, Mr James Hay, Glenearn, Bridge of Earn, Perthshire. Messrs Cameron and Sons bought him at the animal sales at Keiso for the <eeord price of £300, and it was their intention to retain him for their noted flock, but the tempting offer made by ?*tr Sutherland induced them to let him go to New Zealand, after having had possession of him for a season. Mr Sutherland has, appropriately enough, giveii the ram the' name of Kelso Record. He is regarded ns one of the finest shearlings = seen out for many a day. Certaisly his breeding leaves nothing to be 'desired. Kejso Record, there-, fore, • cannot fail to render valuable service in the flock of his new owner. He has a great frame and abundance of substance, with a bold, vigorous face and muzzle, an ideal skin and a covering of wool which it is claimed cannot be beaten anywhere. Mr Sutherland has also imported four exceptionally well-bred females. All are gimniers bred at Westside. and by such noted sires as Royalist, "Westside Standard, and tho £200 Tempest. They have all the best characteristics of the Border Leicester breed. Altogether, the sheep are of exceptional merit, ami were much admired by the New Zealand breeders who were fortunate enough to see thorn.
