ENEMY ON THE DEFENSIVE

LONDON, January 7. "Eye-witness," Colonel Swinton, of Headquarters Staff, reports:—

"The situation at tho New Year is moro favourable than at any time since tho outset. Tho British forco has swelled to a great and steadily increasing army, which is inured to war, and is able to look back on a record of hard fighting such as has seldom been experienced in the past.
