BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL.

* . DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. The annual prize-giving ceremony of the Boys' High School was held last evening in tho.Canterbury College Hall. Mr J. C. Adams, chairman of the Board of Governors, presided. Mr Adams eaid that tho year had been a good one for the school. The examination results showed that good, honesfc work was being done. The school was to be congratulated on the success achieved bj both staff and pupils. The conduct of tho boys -was of a very satisfactory nature. They wore too apt to judge a school by its academic standard. He did not; want tho school to be judged by that standard, but by tho men it turned out. He was eorry that their numbers did not increase. Ono reason was that they demanded something moro than a proficiency certificate for admission. -Another was that sufficient inducement was not offered to tho country boy. Some house should bo set aside under the charge of a master to accommodate tho country boys who could come. The residential schools were an attraction to many parents, and the Boys' High School aimed at meeting the position in some degree. The speaker referred with pride and pleasure to the farewell given to the Old Boys who had volunteered for the Expetlitioiary Foice. (Applause.) They recognised that the Empire had need of their services, and they were amongst the first to volu ltee , their services. As ho had stood and looked at them ho thought this was what a school should do —t\irn out men ready to save the Empire. Ho noticed from tho magazine that seventy had volunteered. This referred only to those who had gone from hero —there were many already at the front in tho ranks of tho services at Home. Ono had already laid down his life —Lieutenant iarsia. (Applause.) -All this pointed to the esprit do-corns of the school and of tho nation. In conclusion the speaker welcomed those boys of the Palmerston School who v.-ero down playing cricket. Mr C. E. Bovan-Brown, headmaster of tho school, reviewed the successful •work of the year, with comments on the successful punjls. The year's work ha' 7 been very successful in all respects. Tho new class-rooms had been of much help to the staff. The cadet corps bad flourished, and in tho Imperial Challenge Shield competition the school was placed first in New Zealand and twentysecond amongst tbo 600 competing schools of the Empire. Very warm praisp had been received from Sir lan Hamilton and General Godley at their inspection of the cadets. The sports this year were unusually .good, as several records had been broken. Cricket and football had been well maintained. Since the magazine had been issued the number of Old Boys engaged in the war had increased to H2. (Applause.) Professor Macmiilan Brown also addressed the gathering. Ho specially referred to tho death of the Hon. William Montgomery, who, ho said, had worked very hard to establish tho Boys' Hi.ih School and to secure tho erection of that hall in which they were. He was ono of tho greatest friends of education that New Zealand ever had. (Applause.) Addressing tho boys, he sail that although life was a process of disillusionment, they should not in that process abandon ideals. ■ During tho evening "The Arrest of Pickwick" was given by some of the pupils. The National Anthem, tne "Marseillaise." and "Rule, Britannia" were also sung. The following was the prize list: — Upper Vl.—Form Prizes—T. MiPiken 'Latin), R. O. Pftgo (English), T.
