THE "WEEKLY PRESS,"
Tho largest hydro-electric plant in Now Zealand, which was formally _et in operation by tho Premier on Wednesday last, has been frequently referred to in the pictorial pages of tho '"'Weekly Press," and in its coming issue that journal gives a number of excellent engravings of tho official visit to tho Lake Coleridge station and powerhouse, when the current was turned on. Tho pictures form a splendid record of tho occasion. They give a. general view, interiors raid external views, and tho Premier, Mr Mas-ey. in tho act of setting the complicated mechanism in motion for the. production and distribution of electricity. Not many miles from this now important place work is still going forward on tho Midland railway, and two pictures show each end of the Otira tunnel, the completion of which is necessary for the junction of tho lino between CbrLstchurch and the West Coast. There are a number of portraits of candidates keeking the votes of tho electors. The war is prolific of pictures, and in the ''Weekly Press," which comes out on Tuesday, there aro many of great interest. Among thorn arc shown scenes at the British coaling station in_ the Persian Gulf, where lighting has been going on against Turkey ; how the Crystal Palace has been transformed into sleeping quarters for the Royal Naval Volunteers i a New* Zealand soldier's kit laid out for inspection: earlier incidents in the invasion of Belgium by Germany; tho hardy Russian troops on the march, the Czar and the Kaiser with the Alexander Guard; and the Austrian*' heavy gun detachment starting out with battery searchlight projector u.ed in conjunction with tho German 100-ton siego guns that wrought such havoc in the,fortresses intercepting the 4_.-__._j-_. advance on France.
