It is officially announced that many exaggerated statements of tho dimensions of the- ILussiau victoiy on tho Vistula havo boon made, based on private i letters. Those should l>o accepted with ioscrvo, but it is beyond doubt that tho German plan to break tho Russian front failed, and the Germans havo been compelled to fall back, suffering immense 'osses. Tho enemy continues to offer obstinate resistance, and it is impossible to consider tho operations concluded. Apparently the main Russian success has been against yon Machson, northeast of Lodz. General yon Machson at one time sot- between the Russian right and Warsaw, and General yon Ilindcnborg sought to relievo Cracow ly ihroa-ton'us Warsaw. General yon Machson was unable to retain his position, so General yon Hindenborg rapidly concentrated an army at Wielun, and tried to turn tho Russian, left. Tho Ger-.nau advnneo near Lodz failed, and the R-'issians, holding the Austrians firmly at Czcnstochowa, began to hem in th-9 Germans from tho south, at the same time env-doping them from tho north. General yon Maehscn was forced to retreat along the Vistula. Many regij monts wore broken, and are wondering eastward of Lodz.
