The monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Fanners' I'rx.oa was held on Saturday, Mr J. It. Simpson presiding. A letter was read from tho •Railway Department, stating that improvements to the Hinds stock-trucking yards had been carried out. The chairman stated that tho alterations which had been made were very satisfactory, and it was deemed to write and thank the Railway Department. The matter of asking the Dominion Couference to take up and fully consider tho question of an Elective Executive was again discussed and, on the motion of Mr W. T. Lill, it- was decided, on tho casting vote of the chairman, that tho branch do not take up the quest ion. A letter from tho North Canterbury Executive enclosing Mr John McQueen's proposals for an amendment of the National En- . dowment Act, 1000, was held over lor discussion at- a future meeting. An interesting development in butter factories viMtfd by Mr V.. Clifton in San Francisco is the preparation of ice-cream. Writing to tho "Agricultural Journal." Mr Clifton says: "It was explained that at one time it was difficult- lo secure the necessary quantity of fresh {-wee', cream during the period of warm weather. With the rising of the thermometer the consumption of ice-cream exhibits an ino.dinate volI nine. Tiiis is now provided for. Fresh : sweet cream is received at any time and in any quantity. This'is manufactured into butler that is permitted to remain uns:>lted. When the increased demand eoines for the ice-crr-ara this r.weet butter i.s parsed, with a proportion of fresh milk, through an oruuisiner. The result is fresh cream. This is used for the of the iced product so cxtcnsivelv consumed by the American people. Cone cups of biscuit material are made in the factory, and these are tho containers for the cream. An enormous street and shop business in ice-cream is time all over America."
