METROPOLITAN TROTTING CLUB.

j SPRING MEETING.

: CUP PEOSPECTS. i Tlio Xcr- Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Spring Meeting has now boconu* a very important feature of tlio t Carnival YTtvk attractions in Christ{chureli, and the Mooting which opons j to-day at- Addingion is tain;; eager;lt looked lowanl to hx the very largo i body or troliir.c: emhnsiasts, as well as by the general public. Judging by present indications, this year's p;athr?r--iiiß will surpass ;ill previous records in tho Tvsy of eroirds, for the racing is certain to prove of exceptional interest, and visitors from other parts of tl»c Dominion will be Riven very convincing I proof of lha hiph standard that has I been reached by the- light harness sport lin Christehurch. The field? engaged j represent the best class in the Dominion land, wiih a number of Australian horses competing as well, too gathering will have au added interest. The Addington eour&o and its surroundings are at present in beautiful order, and tho times that have been registered during*the training operations show that the track has been put in firstclass condition. Tho chief feature of to-day's programme is. of course, the race for the I New Zealand Cup. which carries a stake of 2boo soys, tho largest yet competed for in the Dominion, and in addition tho owner of tho winner will re- j ceivo a very handsome silver cup, pro- j sented by tlio Hon. C. Loui&son. pro- j sident of the Club. Tho final pay- ! ments reduced tho field for tflis event, to fifteon, and a field of at least tour-! teen may bo looked for. j Tho Australian champion. Denver j Huon, figures on the scratch mark, and. even though tho task set him is j a sovore one, his form in New Zealand last season showed him to bo a horse of extreme, brilliance a.s well as stamina. Ho finished second to Ravenschild in last year's New Zealand Cup, won tho New Brighton Cup Free for All. and at; Auckland, in an exhibition I against time, put up an Australasian j record of J.2S 1-5 for two miles. An i jnjury to one of his heels sustained j just before he left Sydney a : few weeks ago, interrupted his preparation, but ho looks very -well indeed, and his party aro confident ho will run a great race. Emmelino's performances aro well-known to ail followers of the sport. At her best she showed horsclf to bo the finest marc yet bred in New Zealand, but for some time past she has been racing without i

much luck, and it seems as if she has lost something of her old brilliancy. King Cole is the joint holder vrith Emmeline of tho Australasian record of 2.S S-6 for ono mile. Ho ha s done no racing since last Norember, and. as he has been giving his trainer some anxiety owing to troubles with his feet and other causes, it seems doubtful if he can reproduce his best form. Albert H. won the Xew Zealand Cup two ?ears aeo, and has a record of 4.33 for two miles. Last season he showed a disinclination for racing, but in his work this season ho has I >ocn going more kindly. Ravenschild. last year's winner of the big raco, vras goius exceedingly ■α-ell in his work last week, when he was responsible for the best two mile performance on the track, hi s time bemg faster than his last year's winning record of 4.35 2-o. Yesterday it was found necessary to eocuro - veterinary assistance, as Itavenschild -was suffering from kidney trouble, but it is hoped that the ailment will prove only temporary. Don Caear showed rerv marked improvement last season, and Ins brilliant performances in tho autumn placed him in the front rank. Ho has all along been ono of tho fancied candidates for th 0 big race, and though in the colder weather bo tvas troubled with lamenees, probably due to muscular rheumatism, ho liaa quit© sbakeu this off now. Hie work has been of an attractive nature, and ho ha** kept nis placo m the public favour, and seems certain to retain ifc. Country Bello « a very speedy mare, but whether eho will eeo out tho distance is open to question m view of her performances at the close- of last season. Bright has got through a very sound preparation, and ho may bo reliod ou to run an honest race. Adonis has a good record of winning performances, which liave shown him to bo fast and a good stayer as well, and if he begins well should bo found in the fighting line. Win boon was made favourite right from the appearance of tho handicaps, this despito tho fact that her preparation has not been uninterrupted. She showed exceptional pace in August, when sbo qualified for inclusion in tho big race, for then she got away badly .and had a lot of ground to make up over tho last half mile, but accomplished h»r task liko a really good one. Sho is certain to command a lot of support, and may go out favourite. Eccentric, Mandarene, Red Mac and Hotoc arc, to a certain extent, unknown quantities, for the three firet-named aro trained away from headquarters, and Havoc comes from tho North lelaad, but according to reports, ho has como through a satisfactory preparation. Lady Clare has a previous Cup victory to hor credit, but she hae been off the scene for some time, and her training displays havo been eomowhafc varied in quality. Tho other events Jjar© filled well, and they will produce eomo excellent racing. Thero will bo a frequent tram eemco from Cathedral equare Tho first raco will start at 12.9 p.m , and tho clay's card is as folows:— 12.3 p.m.—SPRING HANDICAP (in eaddlrt o£ 200 aovs. Two wiles.
