In the third round Smith was cautioned for striking low with lnsjeft. Carpenticr • was immeasurably smarter and cleverer in his footwork. Ho brought hie right across and narrowly missed the point. Ho was carried away by the force of the blow, and slipped on to hi* 1 knees. Before be could attempt to rise, Smith, unable to withhold his hand, delivered a right liand punch with great force on tho back of the i Frenchman's neck. The referee waved Smith away. Carpeptier did not try ito rise, lie was obviously badly hnrt. IHo was brought round after vigorous work by hie seconds. The crowd was so hostile to Smith I that he was forced to leave the ring.
