THE SELWYN SEAT.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir,— Having seen the letter in today's issue of your paper signed "V 1 Interested Reformer," permit mc to say, being ono of the parties mentioned, I* was in favour of this suggestion long since. I suggested some four months ago this courso to those in authority; yet for my pains in the matter and my loyalty to the cause I was thoroughly well snubbed, and accused of being insulting and dictating. If, in a young democratic ccuntrv, -we should 'have a Government of the people, for the people and by the people, why not take the voice of the electors as* to who should get the "Tar brand" ? Mr Georgo Sheat need not havo any misgivings about mc packing the "meeting with my supporters. On the contrary, we will advdrtise the \ meeting largely, and I will take a sporting chance. If the people decide against mc, I will resign instanter, congratulate Mr Sheat and the Selwyn electors on having procured a better man, cut the gruinp and grouch, and get on to my job. Now, Sir, if Mr Sheat is the man 1 believe ho is, he will take mc at my word, and tho sooner he does the better I will be pleased.—Yours, etc., JOSEPH HAMLET. July 16th.
