POSITION IN THE NORTH.
(SPECIAL TO- "the tress."-) PALMERSTON N., July 16. A meat war is developing among tho Palnierston North butchers. One butcher, who undersold by one penny per pound for a considprablo period, is currently reputed to have acquired an immense filiate of the town's r rade. Tho other butchers have nowdropped their prices, and placards announcinc the new tariff are a feature o f the shops. The prices at Wanganui are fully 2d per pound above those at- Palmerston North, but tho public went oil eating meat. The butchers took the trouble t. explain that the price of stock and bad debts were responsible for the increase, but tho public were not satisfied, and fish diets oecame popular. Tho turnover of the butchers was so seriously affected that they have now announced a reduction of prices to take effect at the end of-the month. The butchers in the Rangitikei district, between Marton and Taihape inclusive, have increased their prices slightly for booking.
