STEPS TO ACQUfRE BALFOUR ESTATE. (FRES3 A33OCTAT-ON T___C___t.) PAHIATUA, July 10. For a considerable time past tho Government has been urged to acquire the Balfour Estate of three thousand acres, situated near tho town of Pahiatua. Tho Prime Minister now advises Mr J. H. Escott, M.P., that the Land PurI chase Board recently took steps to ac- ! quire the estate under section 64 of the Land LaAVs Amendment Act, 1913, and that accordingly notico was served on tho Hon. E. C- J. StoA-cns, M.L„C-, ono of the owners. In the case, however, of the Rt. Hon. A. J. Balfour, it is doubtful whether the co-owner (Mr Stevens) has power to accept service under his power of attorney, but be-is writing to Mr Balfour on the subject. Tfee Government is advised tbat there must bo service upon Mr Balfour before tho notico can be gazetted.
