GENERAL REMARKS.

For the next two o r three weeks no seeds of any kind should bo sown m the opon. Tho .soil conditions are much too cold and wet to cow seeds, and even should they drain they will to main stagnant for a long time. On. ; tho other Hand, if seed sowing is delated till after the middle of August at the earliest or the beginning of September, the increasing heat of the sun and the drying of the soil will forco growth at once, and this will continue at an increasing rate as the temperature daily rises. This warning is necessary, as inauy amateurs are tempted to bow .seeds so soon as a few line days are experienced in the winter time, forgetting that the coldest and wettost weather often iollows ac the days begin to lengthen. In tho greenhouse, where 'heating is possessed, seed sowing of some of tho annuals max bo undertaken. This refers to Lobelia, Verbena, Stocks, and Petunias, and some others. Such will form strong plants for setting out iv tho spring time. Tho bulk of tho annuals, however, should not bo sown lor sonio time yet. At this season garden work is limited to planting, digging, priming, and spraying; pruning referring to fmit and other trees. Hoses should not bo pruned in Canterbury, except in warm spots, till after th©/ second week in August. .
