RATES ON SPORTS GROUNDS.

A REMISSION ASKED FOR. (PRE 33 ASSOCIATIOy TEL-GE-M.) AUCKLAND, July 10. A deputation from the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Sports Protection League this afternoon waited upon tho Mayor (Mr C; J. Parr, C.M.G.), to ask for a remission of rateon ground-* used exclusively for the purposes of any ontdoor sport, and not for profit or gain. The Mayor said that he would confess to a good deal of sympathy with the views put before him. It seemed to him that, in places where the population was crowding in, tho sports clubs were fulfilling a useful public duty. They wero keeping lung-spaces open, and tbe whole community got the benefit. True, the bowling find tennis grounds jrero limited to the uso of a comparative few, but so many roods of open space, over which the winds of heaven might blow, wore preferable to terraces of coir-age*-*. So it seemed to him that they wore helping the municipality. It might be possible to do something tn tho direction mc-cated. In the case of the golf club to which he belonged, they were being very heavily pena__**d. He thought the whole thing should be gone into by the Legislature, and, ed far as Auckland City was concerned, ho thought it probable that something could be done. He would be glad "f the deputation would appoint two of ite number to meet the Finance Oommitteo of tho City Council at its next meeting.
