LECTURES AT CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

Tho Cahtcrbury College authorities are instituting a special -series of lectures which will extend from July 23rd to "August 37th, with a view of raising funds for the College library. There will be six lectures altogether, and tbe subject matter is such that they should appeal to a largo circle, and bo very P?-?"- 1 /"/ Professor J. P. Gabbatt, assisted by Miss Millkent Jennings, will first speak on English FolkSon-s. Professor Gabbatt, who is a member of tbe Folk Sone Society, has long been an enthusiastic student of tho beautiful country songs of the old English peasantry. Ho will describe their history,favonrite themes, and musical characters. Examnles of genuine folk songs will be contributed daring tho evening by Miss Millicent Jennings, accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Gabbatt, and gramaphone records of actual peasant songs, as sung by an English peasant and collected by Mr Percy "Grainger, will be introduced. Mr O T. J. Alpers will Bpeak of. "Queen Alexandra's Country." The lecturer, who is a nativo of Copenhagen, intends to dilate on Danish social life and manners. State -ocialism, conscription, education, paasant proprietorship, and the celebrated Danish methods of co-operative farming. At the.next lecture, 'Mr Edgar Stead will erre an illustrated address on birds ana bird life in New Zealand, and Mr I**-. Speight takes tho glaciers and gorges of Central Canterbury as his theme. Another illustrated lecture will be given by Mr J. C. Adams on the Great -Public Schools of England, and will explain many of the quaint traditional customs at these schools. The series will close with an address of great interest on "Some Aspects of Russia," by Professor H. Stewart, who ha* a unique knowledge of the subject.
