LYTTELTON GAS SUPPLY

PRESENT PLANT INADEQUATE. LOAN PROPOSED FOR EXTENSIONS.

■ At last night's meeting of tho Lvtte]top. Borough Council the Gasworks Committee reported on tho question of extensions to tho gasworks, stating that the output had now reached the maximum capacity of tbii works, leaving no margin to meet anything in tho nature of an extraordinary demand, or a temporary stoppage of the works. The demand was always increasing, and was showing no signs of falling off. making it a matter of necessity to consider tho question of extending the plant. The gas engineer was prepared to reoort on the matter, and the approximate cost would be from £5000 to ■ £6000. to meet which a loan would probably be necessary. In the meantime, the following improvements were turgently required, it wa3 recommended that they should be nut in hand at once, tho cost to be a charge against the loan in the i event of it being found necessary to raise fresh capital:—(a) A new 6-inch reticulating main from the works to Brittain terrace in West Lyttelton (£530); (b) the purchase and installation of new condensers (£.75) and one Duritier (£150) •, total £755. It was also that steps should be taken to lu-quire the land necessary to carry out tho proposed alterations.

Cr. Guthrio 6aid that- it was advisable for the Council to proceed cautiously in the matter, as there was likely to'be opposition when the Lake Coloridßo scheme was complete.

Cr. Collins stated that ho did not tliink- tlfo electric lictht' would,, ir terferc with the municipal gasworks to any great extent. Ho thought that the gas would always he required in Lyttelton and was strongly in favour of the work being put in hand at onco.

After further discussion the report was adopted.
