VISITING SCIENTISTS,

THEIR RECEPTION IN CHRISTCHURCH.

A largely attended meeting which included several ladies was hold yesterday afternoon in the City Council Chambers to arrange details in connexion with the forthcoming visit to Christchureh of the members of tbo British Association. Tho Mayor (Mr. H. Holland) presided. The Mayor said that- since the meeting had been called, Mrs Carey Hill, of the Victoria League, had practically taken the wind out of their sails by arranging for tho accommodation and entertainment of the visiting scientists. He read a letter from Mr Lawrence Birks suggesting that as the Lake Coleridge electrical works would be in lull working order by the time the visitors arrived in Curistchurch, tho programme of entertainment should include a visit to the big power station. Dr. Chilton read a number of apologies from various local scientists and others, and then explained the object of the visit of tho ineniuers of the British Association, wno were Holding their f-nmial meeting in Australia, this year. After that meeting aoout 25 ol the members of the Association proposed to visit Mew Zealand and would meet about 15 scientists from Canada and the United States in Auckland in September. Alter visiting Wellington the party would arrive in Christchureh on September 7th, and would remain hero until September 9th. The whole party would number about 100. ai,d tin* Victoria League had very generously arranged lo provide accommodation and social entertainment for th<» visitors. The members of the Britisli Association had arranged to deliver a : series of twelve public lectures in the j four principal centres of New Zealand.

Of theso three public lectures would be •-iven in Christchureh, where a number of Boctional meetings would be held. Their stay in Christchureh would necessarily be very short, and it was desirable to show them a* much as possible of the country. Dr. Chilton then suggested the names of a largo number of influential citizens as a general committee. Tho following.were appointed as the general committee,to make arrangenients for the reception of tho visitors. —The Mayors of Christchureh and Lyttelton, Bishop Julius. Bishop Grimes, Rev.
