GRAND THEATRE.

Yesterday was tho hrst anniversary of tno opening of the Grand Theatre,

and an excellent birtnday piogta___4. wa_ pre-ciit«d, wnicU «lrew crowded audiences at all sessions. Tne principal item was a drama entitled "A Ttirouo at {.take," which was uotable tor *s splendid photography and beautiful scttiuj*. The acting througaout was also very good. The plot is lounded on on histor.cat incident io connexion with th. succession to a throuo in a foreign country. The real heir falls in lovo with a lady-in-waiting in the court, and for her sake abdicates in favour of

his brother, in order that he may legally marry the object of his affection. .Around this incident a very powerful story is written, and during its development many delightful scenes of court life are witnessed, whilst the really moving incidents are of a distinctly'sensational character. Tho picture opens with a brilliant court scene in which tho principal characters are present at a royal reception. From there onwards the plot is most thrilling, and an important bearing on the story is furnished by the heroine coming under tho hypnotic influence of a baron. The result of this influence is well shown on the screen, and tho hapless lovers come to an end which is dramatic to a- degree. "Missing Bonds" was a Kalem drama wherein a villain makes love to his employer's daughter, but she loves an honest clerk. ..Ifhe former steals some important bonds which he gambles away. Meanwhile the couple attempt an elopement, bat are brought back, and are allowed to marry when th© young.clerk recovers .the bonds. * There are two splendid industrial films

—"The Kauri Forests of Now Zealand" and "Hydraulic Mining in California." An excellent comedy, "The Gloves of Ptaines," is also shown, while a fino dramatic picture is "The Birthday that Mattered." The same programme will be shown again to-day.

GLOBF, THF.ATRE. "The Path of Genius" was the stnr drama in the ne-iv programme pcreen<rl at tho Globo Theatre .yesterday.
