ACCIDENT IN CABOT STRAIT. (By Cable.—Prc«s Association.—Copyright.) (Rcceicved Juno Ist, 11.40 p.m.) LONDON, June 1. Tho Royal Edward was accorded a great welcome on arriving at Avonmouth.
Her passengers dcclaro that Captain Wootton's promptitude averted a disaster in Cabot Strait, between -Towfoundland and Nova Scotia.
Tho vessel was going at a reduced speed, owing to a wireless warning. Au iceberg was seen two thousand yu.*"V distant. Captain Wootton reversed nis engines, but the ship struck head-on. Boats were swung out, and f_e passengers mustered, and some placed iv boats, but the ship did. not leak. T_.o bows are badly buckled.
We havo had no previous word or this accident. T„. Royal Edward Is nn 11,117-ton turbine steamer owtiod by the Canadian-Northern Steamsnips, Ltd. She was originally the Cairo, aud with her sister ship, trie Heliopolis, were built six years ago for tho ivhodivial Steamship Company, to run between Marseilles and Alexandria. Tho company failed, and tho vessels wer» sold. The Royal Edward was built by the builders of the Empress of Ireland *— the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company, Govan.
