The liner Empress of Ireland was struck amidships by the collier Store tad, in a fog, and the rent made was so huge that in spite of the liner's bulkheads she sank in a few minutes. The disaster was so sudden that of the 1387 souls on board only 355 wero saved, making the death-roll the dreadful total of 1032. The dead include Mr Laurence Irving, the well-known actor, and his wife, almost the whole of the large Canadian Salvation Army delegation bound for London, ' and Mr and Mrs W. R. Bloom field and Miss Bloomfield. of Auckland. Only twelve women were savod.
