LINWOOD (8) v. VARSITY (8).

Considerable interest was centred in this match, which was played at the Linwood Park. Tho game was confined chiefly to the forwards, but the Students opened up the game in great stylo during tho last ten minutes, and scored 8 points just on tho c.-.1l of time. W. Cummings kicked off for Linwood, who opened with a good forward rush to tho Students' twenty-five. A kick by Simmers gavo temporary relief, but the Green forwards, headed 'by Harvey and Cummings. returned to tho attack, and had the Maroons busy defending. Good defensive work by Livingston, and a dash by McLeod, gave relief. Bush further improved matters for tho Students, and Linwood were forced. Tho Linwood backs attempted passing but Hunt missed a good chance by kicking wildly, and Jermyn kicked out to half-way. Shaw charged down Young's kick, but Colthart came to tho rescuo with a useful run. The Maroons continued to have the better of tho play, and were attacking hard 'when half-time sounded. On resuming, Peterson secured and, aided by tho bad tackling of tho Maroon vanguard, reached tho line, where Norrio secured and scored .t simple try. Edmonds failed with ths kick. Tho Greens kept up tho pressure, but Livingstone got his side out of a tight corner by a timely mark, j Good forward work by tho Greens and fine line-kick-ing by Piercy brought play back to tho Students' line, where, from a scrum, Timms secured and dashed over. Haughey ..cured a good mark a few minutes later, but the" kick failed, and Porter removed to the centre. Haughey misfielded a high kick, and the Maroons were within an ace of scoring. Edmonds, Harvey, and Shaw, by strenuous forward . play, gave tho Greens, an advantage, but Young secured from a scrum near half-way, and, cutting in cleverly, passed to Simmers, who transferred to McLeo_, and the last-named player chished over. Derrett converted with a splendid kick. Linwood 8, 'Varsity 5. ' Tho "Students now opened up the game, and a fine passing- rush, in which nearly all the backs took part, nearly let McLeod over. Fine linekicking by Piercy got his sido out of trouble on numerous occasions. After a period of exciting play, Colthart secured and, with only one man to beat, slipped at the psycological moment. Jermyn, the 'Varsity fuil-back, then made a splendid opening, and carried tho ball right to the Linwood lino, whoro E. Cummings held on to tho hall. From the-free kick that was awarded, Derrett landed a neat goal. Linwood 8, 'Varsity 8. Time sounded shortly afterwards.

Moir was the scorer. Mr H. C. Wilson refereed. Old Boys defeated ' Varsity by 9 points to *8. For the winner- Young score a try, and Blucknioro kicked two penalty coals.
