ACCUSED PLEAD GUILTY

In the canteen cases, owing to tho judge ruling that defendants were agents of the Crown, all tho defendants-, following their counsels' advice, pleaded guilty. Senteneo was deferred.
Defendants were charged with eon--i-piracy in that they accepted bribes from » firm of contractors for canteen business Tbey are:— Military. — Lieutenant-Colonel and Brevet-Col. C. H. T. Whitaker (formerly in command of the Yorkshire Light Infantry at Malta), Hon. Lieutenant and Quartermaster William James Armstrong, Sergeant-Major George Patchy Bennett, Hon: Lieutonant and Quartermaster James Burns, Hon. Lieutenant and Quartermaster Thomas Henry Johnson, Hon. Lieutenant and Quartermaster William Kelly, Staff6ergoant Thomas Millward, Hon. Captain and Quartermaster George E. Mitchell. Hon. Captain and Quarter-, master Charles Ouarrell. Civilian (all connected with Lipton, Ltd.).-—John Cansfield (general manager and a director), Archibald Minto (manager general stores department), James C. Craig, Daniel Lynch, And-ew Laing, Frederick William Owen, Edward Arthur Pegley, Alfred Swain, James Ross Ne-ra.
