DURING May, 1312, the great International Exhibition wes held in London; this. tho first held in London icr 40 years. It proved to bo tho greatest Sower show the word lie.3 ever itreii. Tho "Gardener's Chronicle" gavo a 2;-Guinca Cup for tho best new plunt tho.vn, ar.d after a severe, competition with a new Orchid of great merit, the. nrizc was awarded to an exhibit of the Lepto3pernuim Nichallii exhibited by the Rev. Boacawcn. of C'cnrna!!. Tais was described a? the. best novelty in thi, Eshibition. Tho history of the plant is worth recording, and is as follows:—In tho summer of 1303 Mr W. Nieholls, a well-known woolbuyer of Belfast, North Canterbury, N.Z., while visiting Nairn and Sor.3' Nursery wore a buttonhole of a crimson manuka. The firm at onco reco.3r.ised a new thing, and aeltcd its whereabouts, and if it could be procured. This, however, was a secret, and oil tho inforraction 'endcred by Mr Nieholls ■was that the original plant was growing in the manuka scrub between Chaney's Corner and tho eca. Messrs Nairn, however, ■would not be put off, and asked for cutting, which wore supplied by Mr Nicholle. These cuttings, however, were useless fcr striking purposes, as the growth was too hard, and only one or two plants were raised, and theso wero stunted in growth. Ou a branch brought, however, there were eomo eeeds, which were sown, and as a result ccme 110 plants wero raised. These, with the exception of seven, showed in their growth similar character to the old variety of manuka, and later when in bloom wcrp misUv white. Tho exceptions, however, showed dark reddish foliage, and v, differenro in habit. When in bloom they proved («.he crimson in colour, und from one of theno ftho b«.t variety) the now famous Leptosprrinum Nichallii has been named and introduced into the horticultural word. To" Nairn and Sons tbo honour of distribute in;' this plant to tho world can be accorded. Quite a, number of .plants have been .doliv. ored whero it is much sought .titer.
