A MISSING CHEQUE.
CAUSES A COURT CASE
(rr.ESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, April 30. An extraordinary' combination ol circumstances led to tho appearanco in tho Police Court to-day of Frederick Wells, a young sheepfarmer, who is also cycle champion of New Zealand, on a charge of stealing a cheque for £3.
- It appears that in January last, Jackson, 'a sblicitor, of Waihi, tent this cheque to a Francis Wells, at the Pousonby Post Office, together with a letter explaining the nature of the payment. Ho mado the cheque payable, and addressed tho letter to "F. Wells," but the cheque disappeared. Frederick Wells, in January, was competing in the Exhibition sports' carnival, and sent urgently to his brother, a partner in a- sheep station, for a cheque to be sent to the Ponsonby Post Office. At the latter place ah envelope ctintainiriec a; cheque was given him. He only noticed that, the cheque was on the National Bank, which was his brother's bank, and that it was sicned by a lawyer.. Ho went off to cash it. and the letter lie put into his pocket to read some other t ; me.
