TRANSFER OF H.M.S. PHILOMEL
("Times' , aad "Sydney Sun" Service*.) LONDON, March 13. A note to the Naval Estimates explains that H.M.S. Philomel will shortly be transferred to New Zealand, and that the ordinary channel of entry for New Zealand cadets will be through the Australian NavaJ College. The effective period of service will be seven years. Two light cruisers will be retained by the Admiralty for the New Zealand division) and will be manned by New Zealanders. The Admiralty report shows that 123 vessels have been condemned since 1004. ■They cost £26,417,000. The officers of the Philomel are:— Commander. George N. Ballard ; Lieutenant John B. Morrell (gunnery); Lieut. William Pennetather (navigating) ; Lieut. Edmund A. Hill; Lieutenant (Royal Indian Marine), Bryan Gordon; .Engineer-Lieutenant Edmund Wyles; Staff-Surgeon Arthur I. Sheldon ; Paymaster Edward G. Styles; Sub-Lieutenant Frank N. Stephensonj Gunner, Edward Russell; Carpenter, John W. H. Montgomery; ArtificerEneineer, William Turner. The Philomel was re-commissioned at Singapore, en October 23rd, 1918, for service on the New Zealand station. She is veifr similar to the Psyche and Pyramus, but is slightly her displacement being 2575 tons. She "has engines of 7500 faorsc power, driving twin soreews. Her armament consists of «ight 4.7 in and eight threepounder guns.
