V.M.C.A. SOCIAL SERVICE.

At the. recent Artillery camp at Ripa Island the social service carried ou by tho Young Men's Christian Association was greatly appreciated. Sports and tournaments were promoted, which proved very successful, and the keenest friendly rivalry was shown between" the two garrisons Nos. 4 and 8, tho honours being almost equally divided. At the break-up of the camp on Friday, cheers were given for the V.M.C.A * At mess. Major Cotterill (in command of the Westport division) bore testimony to the value of tho work done for the men by the V.M.C.A.— how it had helped to foster discipline, and added to the good behaviour of the garrison. He said he felt sure that tho men, too, heartily appreciated the facilities offered to them, and it gave him great nleasuro to congratulate the V.M.C.A. on its efforts on behalf of tho men. Lieut. H. Stewart, Bth Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) is attached for training to the Ist (Canterbury) Regiment, with effect from January 19th last. In future a special medical examination for candidates for commissions in the Territorial force will not be neceseary. It is notified for information that application to sit for examination tor commissions in the I» ovular Annv will be submitted to district headquarters as under: —Army entrance examination, January Ist (annually), May Ist (annually) ; military subjects, Octobzr Ist (annually, }±*v i £ t (annually).
