"PROUD OF MY CITY."

TO THE EDITOB. OF "THE PRESS." Sir.—l was much interested in the letter of your correspondent who wrote over the signature '"Proud of my City, ,, and who spoke so emphatically in praise of our tar-macadam streets. There is no doubt that these are a boon since the advent cf tiie motor, for they minimise the dust nuisance, and they don't cut up and wear away with the ■water-bound streets. A year ago an excellent piece of road-making was done on the Hirer road, Avonside, a piece that carries very heavy motorcar and motor-cycle traffic. There was a good crown and rain water ran off it. But already the traffic has ground up and blown away the width of, the road till it is perceptibly hollow, and in a year or two if it isnot protected this jgood piece of work will bo in ruins. But if a thin coating of tnrmacadam were given, the werk of destruction would cease and the road would last for many year.%, neither dusty in summer nor muady in winter. I think it would pay the city handsdaielv to do it.—lours, etc.. THRIFT.
