THE CAIRNROSS DESCRIBED.
Great interest has been created in shipping and engineering circles by the arrival in New Zealand waters of tho Cairnross, which is owned by the Cairn Line of Steamships, Ltd., of Newcastle. Launched on November 26th, 1912. by Aleswrs "Win. DoxforU and Sons, Suuderland, to tho order of ttie Cairn Line, tho steamer is «369£ feet in length, 51 feet beam, and 27J feet dopth, with a deadweight capacity of 7&IU tons, hor register boir.g 401G tons grass, and 2513 tons net. Tho Cairnross has n single screw, driven by geared turbines of the Parsons type. The turbines were designed to run at 1700 revolutions per minute. nnd tho gearing to reduce the revoltions of the rn'opollor to 65 per minute.
