STEAMER
A notable vessel, which represents one of the latest and most interesting developments in marine? engineering, arrived at Lyttelion yesterday morning. This was the bijj; cargo steamer Cairnross, -which is under charter to the Soir Zealand Shipping Company, and -which, is on a voyage from Montreal via St. Vincent, Durban, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, and Wellington. In outward appearance there is little to distinguish th<* Cairnrnss from the l.sual type or tramp steamer which visits New Zealand, but her olaiin to distinction is that sho is the iirst ocean-going cargo steamer in the world, and, therefore, tiie first steamer to visit New Zealand with geared turbines as a ineajis ot propulsion.
