His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool have expressed their intention of being present at the benefit match between the Australian Eleven and Canterbury at Lancaster Park this afternoon.

The Linwood North School Committee has decided to recommend to the Board the appointmeut of Miss F. Ormandj- as assistant misUess. Mr J. C. Scanlon, officer in charge of the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, arrived in Lyttelton yesterday morning, to take charge of the prison there. Mr C. E. Matthews, Deputy-Inspec-tor of Prisons, and Mr E. N. G. Poulton, private secretary to the Minister of Justice, arrived from the 6outh by tho second express last night. Major A. C. Cottrell, Major J. S. Gill, Lieutenant A. J. Green, and Lieutenant F. H. Morgan left by. the Maori for Wellington last night on their return to Westport. Mr W. D. S. MacDouald, M.P., returned to Gisborne last evening, having sufficiently recovered from Ins illness to enablo him to travel through from the Bay of Pleuty. Mr A. H. Parfitt, of Christchurch, will take up th© duties of inve-.cargill Registrar of Old Ago Pensions, consequent on Mr B. E. Murphy's promotion to Wellington. The Hon. A. L. Herdman, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, accompanied by Mrs Herdman, returned from Invercargill by the second express last night, and will leave for Wellington by tho Wahine to-night. Passengers by yesterday morning's steamer included : —Major-General and Mrs Godley, Captain Reid, Captain Robinson, Major Loach. Captain Carey, th© Roy. R. S. Gray, Mr R. McK. McLennan (of the Union Company's o&ce, Dunedin), Mr J. E. Watson, and Mr G. 0. Kean. Mr W. A. Ashton, who has been in the Post and Telegraph Service many years, and was recently in charge at Bluff, has lately retired, and, with Mrs Ashton, is snending som© days in tho North Canterbury district. Mr Ashton was stationed at Kaiapoi for several years.

Mr A. S. Bond (Hororata), Mr L. Crowley (Methven), Mr T. R. Rhodes (Timaru), Mr F. Cuming (Dunedin), Milt. G Robinson (Tapajtui), Mr A. Jones (Auckland), Mr F. A. McNeill (Wellington), Mr W. E. Crewcs, and Mr A. Harrison arrived in Christchurch last evening.

Mr D. McKenzie, Bluff manager for Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd.. who has been, transferred to Christchurch, was entertained at a farewell gathering at Bluff on Thursday afternoon by various public bodies, including the Borough Council, Horticultural Society, Bowling Club, and Methodist Church. The Mayor (Mr W. Hinchey) made a presentation to Mr McKenzie consisting of a purse of sovereigns, and his appreciative remarks were endorsed by Messrs G. Maud, J. Sharp, G. B. Edgington, and H. Z. Chapman.
