NOTES.

(SrECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") TREXTHAM, March 5. It would be difficult to find fault with the weather to-duy. What wind thero v.-as was sieady from the rear, and as the men had plenty of experience ot this wind during tho week, they cou:d not be dissatisfied. The morning opened with tho Champion Ttam-j Match for five-men teams, at 300, 500. and 6JO yards. Tho Opaki Club, which has more wins than any other ciub in this match, added or.c more to their list. The Christchurch Rifle Club, the holders of tho shield, made a big bid, but their iailurc at the fhort range could not bo retrieved, and although they beat all thc others at 500 yards, they had no hope of snatching victory from tho Opaki men. Mclntoah, of the winning team, w_e the only man to reach the century, and thero were only ten possibles throughout the match, those being by ilclniosh (Opaltii, and Sandford (Christchurch) at 500 yards. Tec Christchurch Club made a great fi>ht, but were beaten by D points, they in turn beating Ohura and Suburbs by 9 points. None of the Canterbury men was selected for the United Service Match. This is the first time in the history of tbe contest thai Canterbury has not had at least one member in the team. However, Sandford coached tho -rinntns team. The fitly to fire for the King's Match included Sandford, Franks, and "White, from Canterbxuv. Much of tho interest had gone out of ihe competition, on account of tho commanding lead held by Masefield, the ycune; Sounds crack. Indeed, unices he absolutely b'<*ke down ho could not lose. Masefield made no mistaire in his work, putting up the fine score of 11, and winning tho r-hampiorvship by 16 points—the greatest majority evir seen at a Dominion Rifle Association meeting. When he had fired eeven ehots

ho hed secured the belt. The Canterbury re pre6entativee fired well. Frank made 43 anc 6ecured a badge as a member of tho firsl twenty-five. Sandford put up 40. keeping or the target with every shot, nnd increased hii position in the fifty, but Whito did not dc so well, only getting 30, which left him a point or two lower than when he entered thi fifty. Colonel Collins, in his speech at tho presentation of prizes, emphasised the necessitj for the increase of ammunition to the Territorials. Tho team which will visit Australia to compete in the Empire Match haa been partly selected, the hiehest eight men in the King's fifty beforo the King'e Match was fired forming the bask. To there the nir.'.h and tenth men will be added as emergencies, co that should any one of tho ei-rht drop out, the nest in order will take his place. It is extremely un'ikely that Canterbury will have representation in the team.
