AKAROA RACING CLUB'S ANNUAL

MEETING. _ The- Akaroa Racing Club's Annual Meeting wa* held on the "Racecourse at MotukttTara yesterday. At the commencement the ■weather -was almost perfect, but towards the of the day a cold wind, sprang up, and shortly after the last raco had been run rain. set' ; in from the sou'-weet. ' Tho attendance . was easily a record, and Christchurch sportsmen attended in large numbers. The special trains were crowded, and a great many jour,'ncyed from tho city in motor-cars, while the countryfolk turned out in great style. The racing was interesting all through, and speculation brisk, the sum of JE8728 being .passed through the totalisator,- as against .£6395-handled at last year's Meeting, ah in- * crease of £2333. Sunbeam' led past the stand, but going out oi the straight Goldsceker went to the front, and running down the back stretch led Sunbeam by half a dozen lengths. The leader jumped. Well, and gained at every fence, white the favourite lost a good deal of ground by' his *low jumping. Coming to the last hurdle Goldseeker' still held an advantage, which he further improved on through a good jump. .On landing Sunbeam threw out a determined challenge, but Goldseeker lasted long enough to win by a neck, with Kilts ten lengths away in third ploce, just ahead of Combination.. There was considerable delay at the start, and when the barrier went tip Gargaron got all thc worst of the despatch, while Free and Waterspray carried on the. running well clear of Valhalla. The last-named assumed . command in the straight, and won very e»«ily by half a doxen lengths; a good finish for second place saw, Free prevail by a long reck. Glenroy was fourth. drew clear, and coming into the straight had several lengths lead, while Thrax had also moved up. Flower of the West, Glenfinnan, and Thrax were on term* a furlong from homo, but Flower of the Weet had the most in hand, and won by half a length, with Glenfinnan two lengths awa<y.
