THE CANTERBURY CRICKET TEAM.
TO THB EDITO- OF * < _i-E PHESS." Sir, —After tho defeat inflicted upon the Canterbury team by 'tlie Australians, no doubt the selectors are considering trying some fresh blood in the team for the return match. My opinion is that it is a harder job to get out of tho Canteroury team tiian it is to get into it. After the grand displays given by some'members of the team, which defended the shield this season, the selectors must surely know that the Canterbury members of the New Zealand team that toured Australia havo quite their equals in Christchurch. if Reese or Hickmott had played an innings such as Ileal played against Wellington, they would have been proclaimed as New Zealand Trumper.. Or, had they bowled like Monaghan bowled, they would have been "morals'' for any > team. But Beal and Monaghan have to give way to men "who learnt invaluable things from Australians." (I think they forgot all when they met their tutors again). I suppose the selectors have a better knowledge of the players' abilities than I have, but I will suggest the following team for next week:—Bennett. Reese, Monaghan. Carlton. Sandman, Thomas, Whitta, Beal. Bishop, Patrick, and "cods (wicketkeeper).—Yours etc., ENTHUSIAST. TO THE EDITOR OF ''TIIE TRESS." _ Sir,—As Messrs Whitta, Patrick, Boxshall. and Wilson proved themselves utter failures in Canterbury's first match again the Australians, may I suggest that in the return match their places be taken by the . Revs. BrvanBrown and Monaghan, and Messrs Caygill and Paterson; those, with Messrs T>. Reese, Bishop, Hickmott, Woods, Sandman, Carlton, and Bennett, would make a team worth going many a hundred miles to see. They could not do much worso than the first did and might and probably would, do very . much bettor. If the Rev. BrvanBrown's lenath of residence in Canterburyis an obstacle to his representing us. I think that shou'd he waived in the comtnj: match. lam quite sure thnt_his grace!ul nnd decant batting would delight, and be an eve-opener to the many hnndreeU who would be nre*scnt v and have not vet. soon him hatting. To rrv mind, ho is far and away the best bit<man in Canterbury and f do hope he w«T_ ..lav for us in ,h P oomj'*; . match. He is also a good bowler.— : lours, etc., EXTIIt'STA'-'T March 4t-r_. TTheso two letters are from different correspondents.—Ed. "The Press."] CRICKETERS BEAD THIS LETTER _ ROM MR VICTOR TR-Ml'ia.. United Service Hotel, March 2nd, 1914. Mr Geo.
