CASUALTIES.

0 A very painful accident befel a lad named Albert Wheeler, aged nine years, at Heathcote Valley on Sunday. Tho boy, who is a son of Mr Henry "Wheeler, was playing with an elder brother, and was catching bees, which he placed in a bottle. The elder lad advised his brother to throw tho bottle away, and while attempting to do this the latter stripped the flesh off the first finger on his right hand on a broken part of the bottle, tbe piece of flesh falling on the ground. Tho boy's hand was bound up by neighbours until medical assistance was obtained, several stitches having to be put in. One of those narrow escapes from a fatality which are fairly common in the city, occurred yesterday evening in Papanui road, almost opposite the Carlton Hotel. About 6.35 a cyclist who had mounted his machine on or near tho footpath, and had gone across the tram lines, was returning to get/on his proper side when, but for the prompt application of the brakes by the motorman, he would have been run over by a Papanui-bound tram-car. As it was, the cyclist was knocked off his machine and just managed to roll clear of tbe car, which had still a little way on. The rear wheel of tho bicycle was caught in tho front wheel of the car, and was smashed beyond repair. Tho cyclist himself was, beyond being badly shaken, unhurt. The.prompt action of tho motorman undoubtedly averted a fatality, or, at least, serious injury to the cyclist, who, as it appeared to bystanders, **-_s wholly to blame in tho matter.
