FASHIONABLE FLATS BURNED

SOME THRILLING RESCUES

A fire occurred in Park Mansions, a set of flats in Knightsoridge, opposite Hyde Park, early this morning.

The occupants of the sixth floor were rescued by means of ladders.

A charred body was found in the debris. It was the largest fire in the West End sinco the destruction of the Carlton Hotel.

The inmates of the flats were aroused by tho shouts of on-lookers in the street.

Threo maid-servants, clad in their nightdresses, took refuge on the roof. A fireman climbed ladders two hundred feet high to the screaming women, who threatened to jump unless rescued immediately.

They were finally rescued singly on a swaying ladder.

The two upper storeys blazed furiously.

A waiter named Edwards died when returning to secure somo money.

A housemaid states that while escaping down a corridor in suffocating smoke sho heard Edwards stumble and fall helpless.

She dragged him until the flames and smoke obliged her to leave him.

The firemen's heroic efforts in scaling the building hold tho spectators spellbound.
