LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
Wed*— isdat, October 29,
AFTERNOON SITTING The Council met at 2.30 p.m. LAND BILL.
The Council went into Committee on the Land Bill.
At clause 13, providing for the revaluation of Crown lands in certain cases, Tne Hon. J. ANSTEY moved as a new proviso that if tho lessee or licensee of the said land hereafter acquires the fee simple thereof, the prico of the land shall be determine- by reference to the original valuation, and not to the valuation under this section. He argued that during a bad season a tenant might secure a reduction of his valuation, and while that reduction prevailed he might apply to purchase the fee simple of his land and so secure it at a lower price. Under these circumstances a bad season would be the most profitable thing that could happen to a settler who, owing to a temporary set of circumstances, might make a highly profitable bargain. The amendment was lost by 19 votes to 6.
Tho clause then passed. At.clause 22, dispensing with personal residence, Tho Hon. F. H. D. BELL inserted a new sub-clause raising the limit of income required to take advantage of tho clause to £350.
