CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
The Board.of Governors of Canterbury College met yesterday. Present:— Messrs. J. C. Adams (chairman), C. H. Izard, L.B.Wood, C. H. Opie; S. Hurst Seager, T. Hughes, ,W. H. Montgomery T. W. Adams, and Dr Lester.
Letters were received from the New Zealand Seconelary School Teachers' Association asking for the Board's help in its coming conference with the Hon. J. Allen in refererico to its scheme for securing a better status and salaries for secondary school teachers. Tho Association forwarded to tho Board a copy of its proposals. The chairman said that roughly, the scheme, leaving out the salaries of tho principals, would, reckoning on _ 12 years' service, affect tho Board's institutions as follows: — Girls' High School, £220 a year to £390; £190 to £390, £150' to £250, £180 to £250, and tbe other increases of ,£GO, £30, and £10; Boys' High School, £330 to £490, £250 to £400, £350 to £400, £290 to £400, and the others,.ultimate salaries of £310, £300, £200 and £200. The chairman moved, and Mr T. W. Adams seconded: —"That this Board does not sec its way to send a representative' to the conference."
Mr Hnrst Seager moved as an amendment:—"That this Board, while recog-nisin-r the desirability of raising tho salaries in some cases, does not sco its way to support tbe scheme as outlined by the Secondary School Teachers' Association."
After discussion the amendment was lost, and the motion carried.
Tho Museum and Library Committee reported that the following awards to students of the School of Art Fere made in connection with the national competition amongst Schools of Art in Great Britain and the colonies: —National book prize for oil painting of head from life. Miss Hilda Edgar; commended, studies of hands and feet from life. Miss Annie Gibb; group in oil colours, Miss Marjorie Harris, Miss Ruby Partridge, Miss Caroline Poison.
