OXFORD.
In lieu of the monthly meeting of the Oxford branch of the W.C.T.U., a birthday social was held in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday. There was a gxge attendance, and Mrs R. H. ainsford presided. Resolutions of sympathy were passed to the president on tho death of her brother, and to Mrs J. Wotherspoon, on the death of her mother. Mrs G. Ryde, the Union delegate, gave an : interesting report of the 1 Provincial Convention in Ashburton. Mr C W: Duncombe congratulated the branch on its birthday. Miss N. Gainsford, a returned missionary, gave an address on the effect of the drinking habits of Europeans on the natives of India. During the evening musical items were given by Miss Gainsford. Mesdames Reynolds, Lyons, and Comyns, a.nd Messrs Lyons and Wbyte.
