WORK IN SIXTEEN PROVINCES.
"A year in which faith and patience bave been tested beyond the normal" is recorded in "China an<l the Gospel." the well-illustrated annual report of tho China Inland .Mission. A heavy drop in income was the outstanding anxiety of the year, though a perilous situation was ultimately saved by a magnificent gift of £10.000. In the field itself, as the detailed from the sixteen provinces indicate, the year's task v.-.ts an uphill one. The general unrest has affected the work in various ways, the
Mimbcr of bajitisnis (about 2o'c\Y) still beiiif; below tho desired rate of progress. It i.s, however, a wonderful work that this great evangelical society carries on. m> less than 1010 missionaries, probationers, and associates being eir.ployed, irany of them in districts otherwise quite untouched by Christian effort. Tho total income from nil sources was £70.]31. Educational and medical work are included in the C.I M. programme, though preaching is kept in the forefront. An, interesting feature of the report is the caution with which tho society regards t!<e famous Government appeal for prayer. "Tho day may be a turning-point in the history of tho nation, for good . . . b".t for evil if the Churches begin to put. their trust in governments or men."
