MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. One first offender for drunkenness was fined ss, in .- default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Margaret E. O'Connor pleaded not guilty to a charge of procuring liquor while prohibited. Constable Miller produced a bottle, of whisky he had found on the accused, who he stated was under the influence of liquor. A fine of 40s. in default one month's imprisonment was imposed. * MAINTENANCE CASES. Timothy O'Grady (Mr Cassidy) was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, in >favour of his wife and child, for whom Mr Leathern appeared. There was also an application to vary tho order. Mr Cassidy stated that complainant had not complied with the terms of the order as regards access to the child, as she had left for New Plymouth, and was living there under another name. The Magistrate cancelled the portion of the order relating to the custody of the child, and consequent conditions, in order to allow counsel to take the case to the Supreme Court. He ordered the defendant to pay the arrears at the rate of £1 a week, three months' imprisonment in default of payment. James Thompson and William Thompson, for failing to comply with an order for the support of their father, were convicted and sentenced to fourteen days , imprisonment. AFFILIATION CASES. Frederick Charles Hill (Mr Goodman) was adjudged the putative father of an illegitimate child, and was ordered to -pay 7s 6d a week, with arrears and costs at the rate of 3s a week. Mr Hunt appeared for the complainant. Arthur Charles Brown, charged with failing to maintain . his illegitimate child, subsequent to an affiliation order, was ordered to find one surety of £100, and pay 7s 6d a. week and expenses.
