MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

, *. The V.M.C.A. building was 'well utilised on Monday night. The Reception hall was crowded with young men playing various games, and the Debating Club had a largo attendance in the cosy corner. The Rechabites, representing five tents, used two large .rooms. The Hockey and Referees Associations were in force, and Sunday school workers, Boys Gordon Hall entertainment and exposition occupied \ tho other rooms of the building, while the gymnasium had one of the largest classes of tho season. On Saturday nieht tho V.M.C.A. building was crowded .with young men and women, the latter being the jrucoii of the Men's Association at the first annual reception to the young women's organisation. The programme was in charge of the social committee, and Mr Wm. Goss occupied the chair. There were progressive games played at tables in the Reception Hall, also basket ball and volley ball contest, and , a more formal programme of music and | recitations contributed by Messrs. C. ; . Tidy, J. Mitchell, and Bailey, and the Misses. Dallney, Mitchell and McNeil. Refreshments were served at tho close of the evening. j The annual smoking concert of the Christchurch Garrison Xon-Com-missione/J Officers' Club, was held in Freeman's rooms on Satcrday evening, the president, Col-Sergeant Wise presiding over a largo attendance. Perryman, Drum-Mnjor Sweeney, and Messrs. Ward, Watts, Parfitt, and Allen. The Canterbury Young Mon's* Methodist Biblo Clase Union held a "Bible Class Rally," at Durham street Church, on Monday to mark the beginning of a new year's work. About 50 members sat down to tea. and on behalf of tho union, the Rev. C. H. Laws welcomed tho new members visitors. Following tho tea a short business meeting -was held,. at which it was reported that the total strergth of the union was 185 members, 9-i of : whom wore members of the Church. The I finances were reported to be in a very i satisfactory condition. The remainder {of the evening was taken up with a devotional meeting, which was led by Rev. C. H. Laws. The chairman pave a short address on tho valuo of Bible classes, and of the importance of all members taking an active interest in the work. During the evening a kolo was given by Mr J. Olds, and hvnms suitable to the occasion were sung. Tho monthly meeting of thp Waimakariri Harbour Board was held on Monday. Present —Messrs. Lissa--1 man (chairman), Barnard, Chamberlain and Marsden. Leavo was granted the Kaiapoi Borough Council to scoop ft shingle spit and protect the Mafeking footbridge. The harbourmaster reported a depth of 9ft. on the War with a very high tide, and a probable ' uniform depth of 7ft. The north i.rd south spits woro more defined, and i.he channel would deepen as tho old cl:an- '• ncl v/as cleared. Dredging was needed iat tho public wharf. It was decided j that an ostimato be obtained for putting; tho dredge in icommission. * The by-law for harbour improvement dues, etc, were adopted. The receipts were £66 0s 2d, ard the overdraft was reported to be £118 11s 2d. It was decided to proceed with repairs and alterations to properties. A meeting of the Rawhiti Domain Board was held on Monday, Mr C H. Winny presiding. Mr C. Israelson referred at length" to the wanton destruction of trees in the Domain, and it was decided to enforce the by-laws protecting the Board's property. It was decided to grant tho lease of the Scout house for a second evening in the -week to tho officer in charge of No. 7o Company Senior Cadets for drill purposes. The success which last year attended the Canterbury Caledonian Society a competitions for juveniles in Scottish songs and Highland dancing promises to bo repeated to even a greater extant this year. For the six dancing events, fifteen have entered, which represents | thirty-five appearances of the compcti- j tors. In the Scottish song classes there ' are three entrants. The competitions ; are to be decided next week. A concert held !n the Jb*ier Hall, New Brighton, on Monday, was a great success, a number of people'being unable to obtain admission. The concert was organised by Miss Cherry Pattrnk, and the performers were school children of the Public School, New Brighton. The items were splendidly given, the performance of tho "All Blacks' creating roars of laughter. The concert was in aid of the building fund of the new Methodist Church, New Brighton, and a second concert will be given to-night for the same object. Tho Enox Church Band of Hope gave a good programme at their monthly meeting on Monday, the following contributing:—Piano solo.
