HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.
(PBE<vS ASSOCIATION TKT-EGRAM.) WELLTNGTONYSeptember 1. The following is the High, Coir missioner's cable, dated Londor August 30th. (Quotations, unless otbei wise specified, are averago marke prices on spot):— Mutton—There is a better tone ii the market this week. Canterbur 4 3-10 d, North Island 4 3-16 d; for bes quality lightweight 4 3-16 d. Hire Plate mutton is in small supply. Lamb—The market also shows betre tone this week, and prices are elightl; advanced for all grades. There is S better demand for medium and heavy weight Canterbury twos at 5 9-16 d heavy-weight fours 4Jd, other thai Canterbury ojd. Beef—The market is steady, anc there is a better demand for hinds Quotations: New Zealand hinds 4|d fores 3d. The supplies of American chilled beef aro large. Hinds'42d, fores 2fd. Butter—There is no alteration in the butter market since last week, and no change in prices. French advanced from 2s to 4s. Cheese—The market is firm. There is no change in prices for Canadian, but New Zealand advanced Is. Some offers have' been received for finest cheese for delivery in equal quantities from December, 1913. to June, 1914; inclusive, at 665, landed with terms. Hemp—Manila: The market is depressed, as second-hand speculators are selling. At the close of the market it was somewhat steadier. Hemp, on spot, is fairly,steady, at £31 to £32; October t-o December, £30; January to Mn.roh, £30 10s. The market for New Zealand hemp is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker. Good' fair grade stands at £30 (nominal); fair, £26 10s; ■August to October, good fair, £30 los; fair, £26 los. The output from Manila for the week is 23,000 bales. Wool—The market is quiet. Coarse crossbred of all grades are very firm. Merino prices are easier, and 60's merinos sold at 2s 33d. It is reported that the inclusion of free wool in. the United States new tariff is practically assured, and with the Balkan affairs clearing, prospects are favourable for next month's sales: Cocksfoot—The market is quiet. New Zealand seed is offered at 495, but buyers aro holding back. Danish crops are reported good, and the seed is considered cheaper at 465. *
