Macdonald, at present Assistant xo« - n Clerk and accountant to tho Timaru Borough Council, has been appointed rate collector for tho Christchurch City Council. Mr G. 11. Scales left last night for Wellington. .Mr \V. J. Courtier, Government, orchardist instructor, accompanied by xMcesrs Walter Rae and J. liiingaworth, Canterbury fruitgrowers, left tor Wellington last night by the ilararoa, to attend a conference of fruitgrowers. It is understood that Mr M. Hannan, who recently resigned the position of Crown Solicitor at Greymouth, in order to contest the Grey oy»-election in tho Opposition interests, has been reappointed. Major William Richards, son of-Com-missioner Richards, of the Salvation Army, has been appointed general secretary for thp Army in the Dutch East Indies. Major- Richards hns been attached to tho Salvation Army for fifteen years, t and ha 3 occupied positions ■of distinction. Other sons of Commissioner Richards, in the Army nro Adjutant S. Richards (Germany), Ensign D. Richards (South Africa), and Captain H. Richards (England).
