Tho To Aw , arnutu Chamber of Commerce, in following up ite efforts urging the minimising of dangers at railway crossings, found a but orrqneous, opinion that there are J obvious difficulties to be faced in the I cstablishmient of automatic signals. ! Reference to Mr Thomas Edison, the j w©rld-fa.in<?t] inventor, shows tl»*t no ; such opinion is held by him; he sees no difficulties in ttw connection. Replying to the Tβ Awamutu Chamber from his laboratory in New Jersey, on Ist August, Mr Edison ■writee:—"Let mc say, in reply { that thero are many devices already- in oee ! where a train" approaching a crossing ; rings a bell electrically. This is ample. Any of your electrical engineers could Apply to yonr crossings an device which will automatically ring a bell .it the crossings long in advance of the train's aowoeofo.
