BOROUGH COUNCILS.
— -. -4 RANGIORA. The monthly meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council was held on Friday evening. Present—The Mayor, Mr J. Ransom, Councillors Blackett, Boyd, Dix, Jennings, Lane, McGruer, Sutherland, Walker, and Wright. It was decided to allow the extra grant to the Fire Brigade this year for renewal of uniforms. A sum of £5 was granted to the County Council for the suppression of small birds. In compliance "with the request of a recent meeting, it was decided to convene a public k meeting to discuss the question of rating on unimproved values, but the majority of the councillors not being favourable to the movement it was deemed unnecessary to invite a speaker to address the meeting. Mr R. Bell and Mr T. R. Cresswell, as a deputation on behalf of the High School Board and technical classes, waited on the Council for a grant to the institutions, and pointed out the great advantages of these schools to tho town and district. A grant of £10 to the technical branch was made. A statement was presented showing that some £14 was owing under the sanitary system, and it w&s decided to forward a final notice prior to taking legal proceedings, similar action to be taken against offenders in regard to dilapidated fences. It wns decided to have all barbed wire removed from fences abutting on streets. In reference to the system of refuse-removal in the central area, on'y 34 out of 157 had agreed to the system, and the Council decided to proceed to frame a by-law to make it compulsory, the committee to report at the next meeting. Cr. Boyd reported on his interview with tho fence Department at Wellington respecting the Drill Hall. The Mayor and Crs. . Boyd and Jennings were appointed a committee to take any steps necessary to secure tho Hall for the town. As the requi-sito number of subscribers were co-mectcd with the telephone, it was decided to ask for the hours of the telephone bureau to be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
