AUSTRALIAN TRAGEDIES
SENTENCED TO BEATH. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) BRISBANE, August 30. Ernest Austin, a farm labourer, was found guilty of the murder of Ivy Mitchell at Sainford on June 9th, and was sentenced to death. SHOT DEAD. HOBART, August 30. A young man named Alfred Britton reported to the police that while he and another young man named Charles Jones were hunting on Mount Faulkner on Wednesday, Jones accidentally shot himself. Britton has now confessed that he shot Jones. He stated that after hunting all tho morning they made another start in the afternoon, and a dispute arose about who should use the double-barrelled gun. Jones clicked the hammer of his gun at Britton, and the latter pointed his gun and pulled the trigger, Jones falling dead. Britton declares that he did not know his gun was loaded.
