CHARGE OF SHOOTING.
EX-CONSTABLE IN THE DOCK. JUDGE'S DECISION ON A LAW POINT. (By Cable. —Ptbm Ateociation.—Copjrriekt.) MELBOURNE, July 19. In tho case against ex-Constable Calwell, charged with shooting with intent to murder, the Chief Justice said tho caso did not come within tho. section which indicated that a weapon muet bo aimed at another person. The evidence showed that the revolver had. not been pointed at another.
The jury, by direction, returned a verdict of not guilty.
A sensational squabblo occurred at the police barracks on the 10th of last month. A constable, allegedly drunk, refused to leave, and the refusal was followed by tho firing of two revolver shots. As the result of tho affair, Constable Cahvoll was summarily dismissed from tho Force, and arrested on a chargo of shooting with intent to murder another constable. Tho latter was not injured. Another member of the Forco was suspended on a chargo of drunkenness.
