Work proceeded at Smithfield to-day with a good number of Killers. Ahero are many applicants, but some selection according to skill is necessary. At Pareora some free men knocked otf in sympathy, with tho unionists, but no difficulty is anticipated in getting tree men. Tho steamer Zoalandic came in yesterday to load 30,(KX) carcases, tallow, otc but the waterside workers would not turn to in tho afternoon. They said they were waiting tor instructions from tho headquarters of tho Federation. The same reply being given this morning, the ship's agents gave them till noon to mako up their minds, mo union not being prepared to answer, at noon free labourers were called tor, and there wero plenty of applicants to form a gang, some, prominent business peoplo taking off their coats to set an example. Those in authority state that for inexperienced men they got through tho afternoon's work with creditableexpedition in loading cased goods and carcases, passing the latter into tho hold and stowing in very good time l>er truck.
