AN EXPLANATION.
Dr. Scott, medical superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital, when seen on the matter *ast night, said that the nian was sent to him by Dr. Newell as bekig a case for sanatorium treatment. Hβ consulted Mr Wharton, the secretary of the Board, and they decided that as the man belonged to Wellington, the proper thing was to send him there, lie accordingly gave the man a note to the medica. superintendent of tho Wellington Hospital, and he left with the intention of catching the boat that night. It was not so urgent a cjise that the man could not travel to Wel.ington that night. Had he been very bads he would not have been able to walk tip to the hospital as he byid> done. The man had just been paid off, and it was assumed that he had money for his passage, but in any case the Board would havepaid his fare had it been required. The question of who would pay the man's fees did not enter into the matter at all. It was felt that as the man belonged to Wellington, and, was able to travel, it was not a proper thing to tako him at the Christchurch Hospital when it might mean the shutting out of a North Canterbury patient. Had the man been very bad he would, of course, been taken in at the hoepitai no matter where he came from.
