HON. W. H. HERRIES AT WAIAU
(moM ora special eeporteh ) WAIAU, May 7. Before leaving Waiau this morning i the Hon. W. H. Herries was waitod upon by the local school committee ia connection with a matter of some interest to inhabitants. The representations of the deputation were that the expenses of ruanmg the school were far abovo the capitation grant allowed by the Gorernmcnt, and tho committee had u.s a consctjuenco been for years under a load of debt. " To relieve th:S. it asked that the some i.be.al treatment should be extended to rl:o backblocks schools as was given to these of the town. l t was pointed out th.it in "ttaiau coal was double the cost in Christthurch, and other expenses were proportionate. As a protest against tr.c position, the honseholdors at the recent election of school committees retiised to elect one for Waiau.
